For many years, the country's coffee growers have used the slogan "Juan Valdez drinks Costa Rican coffee" to promote their product.
Costa Rica's ambassador to the United States notably used the phrase in an advertisement in The New York Times in order to garner attention for Costa Rican coffee.
However, this slogan came under fire from the Federación Nacional de Cafeteros de Colombia, the organization that represents Colombia's coffee growers. In response, a Tico coffee company produced an affidavit from a Costa Rican man, Juan Valdez, certifying that he does indeed drink Costa Rican coffee. Confronted with this fact, the Federación agreed to drop any further legal process.
